Types of Fishing Methods

Jigging

If you want to stay busy, then this type of fishing is for you. Jigging requires the angler to work the fishing rod in a repeated motion. Using medium action rods this can produce some of the most exciting fishing on the lake. With a three to four ounce weighted jig baited with a minnow you can hardly wait for the captains orders to drop you lines and start fishing. Then you feel your strike, set your hook, and start reeling. Oh! Don't forget to yell "fish on"!

Trolling Downriggers

This is probably the most popular way of fishing Lake Tahoe. Downriggers are either hand crank or electric machines. The electric downriggers are equipped with a cable connected to a lead weight which has a pinch clip attached to it. You then clip your line to the weight and the downrigger lowers tackle to whatever depth you desire. When a fish strikes your bait or lure, you release out the pinch clip and then you fight the fish with no weight. This style of fishing does not take much work from the angler until the fish strikes, but with four downriggers this can produce lots of action.

Toplining

This light tackle trolling is probably the most challenging method on the lake, but far worth the wait. Using your favorite lure tide to six pound line, let out 150 to 200 feet behind the boat. When trying to land your fish be careful not to break your line, many ten pounds plus are caught each year.

Fly Fishing

You can't beat the fly fishing in and around Tahoe. There are opportunities for all types of fly fishing. Rainbow, Cutthroat, Brown, Golden and Brooke are just a few of the trout you may catch.
