Hunting at Shepp Ranch | Idaho Outfitters

Shepp Ranch is a bonded and Insured Idaho Outfitter.

Salmon River Mule Deer Youth HuntWe hunt in central Idaho’s Gospel Hump Wilderness (see Buffalo Hump quadrangle) in Fish and Game unit 19. This country is steep and rugged, with nearly a dozen mountain peaks ranging from 6,700 to 8,300 feet, making it ideal habitat for big game.

Spring Bear Hunts:

Our hunting season begins in April with Idaho spring bear hunts. Bears come out of hibernation and move towards the green grass along the river canyon. This is a great time to visit us for the first time or with your family. This a great wilderness adventure vacation.

Elk Hunting at Shepp Ranch

Elk Hunting starts in September with out our rifle bugle season. Later hunts in October and November are best for deer and elk combination hunting as the game moves in for winter and the deer enter their rut.

Cougar Hunts at Shepp Ranch

After elk season we offer cougar hunting in a wilderness setting. This is an incredible hunt with challenging chases in the side canyons of the Main Salmon River.

Bighorn Sheep Hunts, Moose Hunts

Shiras Moose and Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep permit application season is April and the hunts take place in the fall.

Fly Fishing:

In the summer, fly-fishing trips on the Salmon River and the streams leading into the river are one of our more popular guest ranch activities.  Guests can experience the best of Idaho’s fly fishing opportunities from the Ranch and catch plenty of trout in the main river.

For added adventure, horse pack, hiking, or jetboat excursions  open up  new opportunities in a variety of streams and lakes.

During the summer, we offer great small stream fly-fishing. Crooked Creek runs right through the ranch, offering miles of water to explore right from your cabin door. Most fish caught are small steelhead smolts (rainbows), along with some larger cutthroat trout. There are also several other streams to fish within a short jetboat ride from the ranch. These streams are very productive. And while the fish are not huge, the plentiful action makes for super fishing.

Steelhead Fishing:

Shepp Ranch is an ideal Idaho Fly Fishing Lodge.  Situated on the spectacular Salmon River in the a remote wilderness location, yet with all the comforts of home, the Ranch makes a perfect base station for Steelhead and trout fishing.

During spring and fall we have some of the best Steelhead fishing in all of Idaho.  Our experienced guides know the river’s nooks and crannies, and know when the fish are moving, and our jet boats allow us to cover a lot of the river every day from our base at the Ranch.

During early spring and late fall we fish for steelhead on the Salmon River using two jetboats. Depending on the time of year, we use spin or casting rods to drift bait or pull plugs. Fishing from the boats is productive, and provides a great opportunity to visit with friends, as you fish in a spectacular wilderness setting.  We also can accommodate fly fishing from either the boats or great locations in the canyon.

The Salmon River Canyon is the second deepest gorge in North America. The rugged, rocky canyon walls provide dramatic scenery as you spend your days on the river. During spring wildlife is abundant in the canyon. It is common to see elk, deer, bighorn sheep, and occasionally black bear offering great opportunity for wildlife and bird photography. Few places offer steelhead fishing in such a beautiful, remote setting.
