Although it is a working crocodile farm, the Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm near Paarl in the Western Cape also offers excellent bass fishing, which is why it is featured in “Bass and Trout Venues of the Western Cape” written by Paul Cochrane (Tel:073 6297903, 021 7874777, e-mail: paulcochran@iburst.co.za.). The 1 ½ hectare dam on the farm is stocked with Largemouth Bass and Blue Kurper and fishing with lures and flies only is permitted. Small rowing boats and float tubes are allowed.
Angling times are from 0900 to 17h00 so as not to disturb residents staying in the chalets close to the dam. Tackle may be hired from the shop on site, and catch and release is policy. A jetty is on the shop side of the dam that makes for a relaxing time while out fishing. Lures that Paul Cochrane has found to be successful include small to medium leadhead grubs, plastic lizards with brown being a good colour, and various other plastics. Crankbaits work well and in certain areas spinnerbaits are also productive. The farm is open seven days a week and picnic baskets can be arranged ahead of time and go down well after a morning’s fishing (visitors are reminded not to bring their own food). The curio shop also has a wide range of crocodile leather goods for sale. One chalet is available on weekends only as the rest are all privately owned.
