Mesquite Country Outfitters offers fully guided hunts for wild Bobwhite quail, whitetail deer, mule deer, turkey, dove, wild hogs, and varmints on the 165,000 acre Pitchfork Ranch in Dickens and King counties of the Rolling Plains of Texas.  The Pitchfork Ranch is a working cattle ranch with terrain including mesquite pastures, scrub oak thickets, rugged canyon and cedar country, and a few crop fields and food plots.  Lodging and meals are provided on location for most hunts. The ranch holds good numbers of mature whitetail bucks and a few mule deer.  The quail, turkey, and dove populations in this area are outstanding. Wild hogs and varmints are abundant on the 257 square miles of hunting territory.  All game animals are 100% wild.  No high fences or pen-raised critters here!!

This region is known for its outstanding wild quail hunting.  The ranch has the right combination of weed growth, insects, cover, and range management necessary for wild quail to thrive.  We have at least 120,000 acres of excellent quail hunting territory and there are quail on all 165,000 acres of the ranch.  Please visit our Texas Quail page for more information.  Click here for available quail hunting dates in 2015-2016.  Are you a single quail hunter looking for hunting partners?  If so please visit our single hunter page for contact information.

Only recently has our area gained notoriety for its trophy whitetail hunting.  Better areas of the ranch average approximately 8 deer per square mile.  This relatively small number assures that our deer herd is healthy and that there is no competition for quality whitetail forage.  Our deer are generally larger in body size than those found in most other parts of Texas.  The absence of hunting pressure along with sound management practices have allowed our deer herd to maintain a near one-to-one buck to doe ratio.  We do require that all bucks gross at least 130 B&C points.  Typically our trophy whitetail bucks average around 150 B&C gross inches in good habitat years.  Please visit our Texas Whitetailpage for more information.

The Pitchfork Ranch holds several different flocks of Rio Grande wild turkeys.  Our love sick gobblers respond readily to the calls of an interested hen.  The ranch offers excellent fall and spring turkey hunting.  Bowhunters and shotgunners will love the up close action.  Hunter success rates average well over 1.5 birds per hunter.  Please visit our Texas Turkey page for more information.

There are a few mule deer in the rugged canyon and river country on the southwestern quarter of the ranch.  These deer are difficult to hunt but sport racks well worth the effort.  As with our other game animals, our mule deer herd has experienced no hunting pressure.  Please visit our Texas Mule Deer page for more information.

September normally offers excellent mourning dove hunting as the migrating swarms feed on wild sunflowers and other seeds.  We also have a good population of doves that call the ranch home year round.   Please visit our Texas Dove page for more information.

The ranch holds literally thousands of wild hogs and varmints over all 165,000 acres.  The wild boar hunter will see plenty of action at food plots, water holes, and brush thickets.  Some of our hogs have strong genetic ties to the Russian boar.   Coyotes and other predators cover the ranch.  The lack of hunting pressure has made these animals very approachable (sometimes too close for comfort).   Please visit our Texas Wild Boar and Texas Varmints pages for more information.

The Pitchfork Ranch and Mesquite Country Outfitters are in the process of implementing a game management program on the property.  This program includes year round supplemental feeding as well as habitat improvement.  The 1998-99 season was the first season that hunting had been formally offered over the entire ranch.  The wildlife has had virtually no hunting pressure for many years. All hunts are fair chase and absolutely no high fencing is used.  We strictly monitor our wildlife population.   Hunting is reduced during drought years.

We are proud of the Pitchfork Ranch and its heritage.  We are proud of this area.   You will be greeted with enthusiasm and treated with courtesy.  We give all hunters a brief tour of the historic ranch and its headquarters.  Bring your camera!   We are now booking hunts for all game animals for the 2015-16 season.  If you are after a trophy buck, excellent wild quail hunting, lots of Rio Grande gobblers, wild hogs or varmints then call today to book your adventure.  Please visit The Pitchfork Ranch web site to learn more about the 132 year history of the ranch.  Hunters should expect a great western outdoors experience.
