Growing up in rural Wisconsin my family always had a bird dog. We mainly hunted ducks and the occasional pheasant in the wild.  I remember my first trip to a game farm when I was ten years old and had a chance to get on multiple birds in a short period of time....I was hooked.   Even then, I found myself paying attention to the dog rather than worrying about my next shot. Our big Lab, Magic, enjoyed hunting as much as we did.  During his last hunt he went hard and I was worried he would not come back, but he kept on working.  After Magic died at the ripe old age of 12, I didn't have the opportunity to own a bird dog for a few years.

In 2007, when my wife, Sandra, and I were living in North Carolina, I bought an eight week old black Lab from the Jamestown flee market who we named, "Roch."  I wanted to train Roch to hunt and had met Bob Freeze on some guided hunts at White Farms at Cool Springs near Statesville in NC.  I really enjoyed hanging out with him and hearing his philosophy on life and dogs so I gave him a call.  He invited me down to Cool Springs during a NUCS field trial. I brought Roch who sniffed around at some feathers and seemed interested. The people at the trial were very nice and treated me like an old friend.  That was the year we started the Bird Dog Club. A group of us who had puppies would come to the game farm on Saturdays then go home and work with the dogs on what we had learned. Just one year later, Roch achieved his Amateur Champion status from the NUCS.  I’m not one for bragging on titles; I mention it only to emphasize how much I learned from Bob. I have enjoyed working with many other dogs as well including Boyken Spaniels, Retrievers, and German Shorthairs.

Sandra and I moved back to Wisconsin about 2 years ago and well, to be honest, the weather is not for us. So, Sandra and I, along with Roch (age 6 years), and Spot, (did I mention we have an English Pointer?) are planning to move back to NC before the next bird season. Bob is entrusting me to run Cool Springs. We are going to offer the same great services from friendly and knowledgable staff who know dogs and bird hunting. I hope you will come see us and enjoy some time in the field. There is NOTHING I enjoy more than being in the field with a four-legged friend and watching him work. If you have any questions please call me. 828-638-5269
