John and Karen have 3 grown sons, 2 daughters-in-law and 7 granddaughters. Their greatest accomplishment was to participate in the raising of 3 principle-centered and financially independent sons.

Karen and John established the Live Oak Ranch in 2000.  It was their desire to buy unimproved ranch land and develop a great hunting ranch to deliver pleasantly memorable hunting experiences with fine lodging, good food, and high scoring animals at reasonable harvest fees.

John is a licensed breeder of whitetail deer (Permit # TX1939) and is a member of the Texas Deer Association (2006-08 President of Region 4), the Texas Wildlife Association, a Lifetime Member of the Exotic Wildlife Association, a Board Member of the Exotic Wildlife Association, and a Founding Lifetime Member of the North American Whitetail Registry.  In 2011, he was awarded the Charlie III and Louie Schreiner Memorial Award by the EWA.  In 2016, John was inducted into the EWA Hall of Fame. He  has also served on the board of trustees and was  Treasurer of the American Geological Institute Foundation, was a member of Petroleum Producers Executive Committee of the Gas Research Institute, the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, and the American Association of Geologists. John also served on the board of directors of the Houston Zoological Society, on the Advisory Board of the University of Texas Geology Foundation, an advisory council to the Bureau of Economic Geology, and the Advisory Board of Iowa State University’s Physics and Astronomy Council.

John retired from Conoco in January, 2002 as Vice President of Exploration and Production Technology after 28 years of service. In 2001, he was awarded Conoco's Leadership Award.

John received a B.S. from Eastern Illinois University and a PhD from Iowa State University.  He also worked for the Advanced Research Projects Agency from 1972-74 at Oklahoma State University.

He has published papers on surface superconductivity, and mechanical and optical properties of alkali-halides.  Also, he authored or co-authored many Conoco research reports and Advanced Research Projects Agency reports. John has also authored many short stories on hunting adventures that have been published in magazines, books and newspapers.
