Welcome to British Columbia's East Kootenay Region, a pristine wilderness with game population surpassed only by plains of Africa. At Grizzly Basin Outfitters we understand what you are looking for in a Big Game Hunt.  Our work ethic is second to none and it shows.  Come see for yourself why so many Hunters come to have the hunt of a lifetime and return year after year.

Rocky Mountain Elk

Elk Hunting is our specialty. Our guides are some of the best in the business.  In my opinion you cannot consider yourself a seasoned hunter until you have heard and felt an angry Bull Elk, at 20 yards screaming at you, begging for a fight.

That is pure adrenaline and excitement!  Every hunter needs to experience it.  At Grizzly Basin our Elk hunting is outstanding and we live for it!  We are fortunate to be one of the few places in North America where you can rifle hunt Elk in the rut.

Our Elk populations reaching an all-time high, with many mature bulls available. The past several years have been the best on record for trophy Elk hunting in the East Kootenays, and we expect the next few to be the same or better.  Our success rate on our Elk has consistently be 80%+.  Combine that with trophy Bulls and unmatched scenery and you certainly have the mixture for a hunt you wont soon forget.

The past several years the Elk Hunting in the East Kootenay has been some of the best on record and we expect it only to be getting better.  We only take a limited number of Elk hunters each year.  Our area could definatly stand more Elk hunters but here at Grizzly Basin it is paramount for us to maintain the populations and quality of animals that have made us one of the premier Elk hunting Destinations in BC.

Most of our hunters combine their Elk hunt with the pursuit of black bear, mule deer and whitetail, which are included (apart from the tags) in the base price of the package. But you can also choose a packaged, longer hunt that includes Rocky Mountain Goat.

Interior Mountain Grizzly

The hunt of a lifetime!  The grizzly is one of the most majestic game animals in North America, our hunting area has them — in mind blowing numbers.

Our area supports a very healthy grizzly population. Based on government studies of British Columbia's bear habitats, several parts of our territory received the highest rating for its ability to support Grizzly bears. In fact, despite abundant berries and breathtaking vistas, there are certain areas in our territory that local hikers and huckleberry pickers avoid altogether - simply because grizzlies are so prevalent.

Since they are Interior Mountain Grizzlies, they have silvertip fur with color variations from dark to light brown. Ornery, with thick fur and long claws, they are a formidable, yet beautiful animal. They make a spectacular trophy!  Grizzly Basin boasts one of the best Mountain Grizzly hunts British Columbia.

In the spring, the Grizzlies emerge from their winter dens and immediately move to the avalanche chutes to feed on the tender new sprouts of grass. The big boars are the first to emerge from their dens, and we try to coordinate the hunt to this time.

We hunt these trophies by glassing the grassy basins and then undertaking a carefully planned stalk to get within range.  Depending on the weather, we hunt grizzly primarily by horseback. Early in the season, we will also use snowshoe to access some of the basins that still have deep snow at lower, shaded elevations.

Spring time in Rocky Mountains, hunting the King of the North American Wilderness, adventure at its finest.

White-tailed Deer, Mule Deer

One of the best kept secrets of our area! Our hunting areas afford outstanding opportunities for Mule deer and whitetail hunting. With a number of rather mild recent winters, the deer populations are thriving.

Our Grizzly Basin area has the opportunity at world-class mule deer during the first half of November. This is prime time when the mule deer are moving from higher elevations, and usually coincides with the peak rut.

We hunt whitetail deer at lower elevations where we know they reside. Mule deer are hunted in old-growth burn areas and some of our more open drainages.

We use horses to access the productive deer hunting areas.

Many of our hunters bag a mule deer or whitetail while Elk, Goat or Moose hunting. However, we also hold a special deer hunt, which typically coincides with the peak rut (early to mid November). Our late mule deer hunt targets the migrating bucks as they move to lower elevations from their high mountain lairs.

Black Bear

Grizzly Basin is located in ideal habitat for black bears.  With an abundance of huckle berries, and fall feed it is not uncommon to see 8-10 Black bears in a day.

The BC government commissioned a recent study to identify the location of high quality habitats that are rich in bear food and other ecological requirements. The Grizzly Basin area received the highest rating for its ability to support black and grizzly bears.

We consistently achieve 90+% success rate on these bruins, with a good percentage of cinnamon and other color phase bears. We hunt by spot and stalk method and occasionally use predator calls. We mostly use horses to access a number of drainages and avalanche areas.

In the spring, we hunt alpine grass slides that have been cleared by avalanches in the winter and sprout tender grass in the spring. The bears, fresh out of their winter dens, aggressively seek out this nutrient rich food. Some days, you can view up to 10 bears per day! Stalking a big black bear makes for a very exciting hunt.

We also offer hound hunting for bears.  Our guides have tremendous passion for using hounds to hunt for bears and other predators and have many years experience in leading successful hunts for black bear.  We also takes great pride in our pack of hounds, which are extremely well trained.

You have the option of booking a hound-only bear hunt, or, if available can add hound hunting for a day or two as part of a spot and stalk hunt (an extra fee applies). Many hunters who try hound hunting for a day get immediately hooked. Watching the expert hounds do their magic and becoming part of their team is incredibly exciting. Please call to inquire about availability and fees for hound hunting for bears.

With moderate weather, snowcapped mountains and sounds of spring, this is a beautiful time to be in the mountains — and a great cure-all for the pangs of withdrawal suffered at the end of the previous year's fall's hunt. And with long days, our clients generally like to hunt early morning and evening, and rest or go fishing during the day.

In the fall, you can hunt bear by itself, or in combination with Elk, Moose, Deer, or Mountain Goat.

Cougar, Lynx, Bobcat, Wolf

Hunt the natural predators of our game population! Naturally, with the good populations of ungulates, comes a healthy number of cougar, lynx, bobcat and wolf.

We are located near a world-class ski resort. The resort's owners chose the area based on its excellent snow conditions — and thanks to these conditions, we usually have no shortage of fresh snow on these hunts. This is a true blessing for the predator hunter, as it helps in quickly sorting out which trails are hot.

Our areas include significant winter rangeland for large populations of deer moose and elk which not only migrate from remote valleys in our territory, but come from distant valleys in the surrounding region. The predators descend on our area in good numbers to hunt for food.

We try to limit our take to mature males.

When hunting these predators, we generally use truck and snowmobile to locate a fresh track, and then employ the hounds for undertaking the chase. The hunt usually begins well before dark whereby we sort through what is usually several sets of fresh tracks and prioritize them based on size and freshness. We can tell the quality and sex of the cat by the track. If we find a female or small tom we move on and keep looking for something better. By mid afternoon if nothing else is found most of our past hunters opt to run the small tom or female for the fun of it, some excellent photo opportunities and to stretch the legs out. Some of these predators will travel a significant distance, so it is important to be in great shape before embarking on one of these hunts.

The adventure and the scenery are first class. There is nothing like the sun rise on a crystal clear morning in the mountains with an inch of fresh snow. The call of the hounds and an angry cougar at the end of the trail is a site to behold.

We offer a 7-day Cougar hunt or a 10-day predator hunt which includes Cougar, Lynx, Bobcat and Wolf.
