Every year, more than 5,000 big game hunters from all around the world come to beautiful British Columbia, Canada, in pursuit of great hunting adventures. Whiteswan Lake Outfitters has been a part of many successful guided hunts.

Locally owned by Darryl and Joyce Sword, Tim and Carolyn Ruby all from the Kootenay area, WSLO is committed to using the best practices regarding fair chase and hunting ethics. We support wildlife conservation efforts through the Guide Outfitters Association of British Columbia.

Our guiding team is devoted to providing the hunter a safe, fair chase hunt with a reasonable opportunity to harvest a mature animal typical of the Kooteney area.

Hunt camp has a relaxed, casual atmosphere with home cooked meals and comfortable cabins. Every effort is made by our team to make sure your hunt with us is safe, fun and enjoyable.

Of BC’s deer family, elk are 2nd to moose in size.  A 6 point minimum standard provides a trophy hunt.  Bugling an elk is exciting and challenging and your experienced guide will use all his skills to call in a bull elk.

Hunting is done from the main camp or several outpost camps.  Pack horses may be used in remote locations.  This can be a physically demanding hunt, however, your guides will tailor your hunt in order to meet your needs.  We will try our best to accommodate physical limitations.

Bighorn Sheep

The rocky mountain bighorn sheep is one of the most challenging hunts and highly coveted big game trophies in the world.

Our sheep population is one of the best in our region. Full curl minimum standard provides a trophy hunt. Our sheep guides have many years experience with Whiteswan Lake Outfitters.

The bighorn sheep hunt is either an early or late season hunt and must be booked well in advance. This is a very physically demanding hunt that involves plenty of backpacking over some very rugged rocky mountain terrain.

Mountain Goat

A Rocky Mountain Goat is one of the most challenging of all hunts.  Hunting a WSLO goat provides a true rocky mountain experience. The goat population in our area is one of the very best in BC.  The large population boasts an average horn length over the past 15 years of 9 1/2 in.

This hunt is mainly done out of remote camps.  Hunters need to be physically prepared for hiking, backpacking and horseback riding.  Later season hunts add the challenge of snow cover, however, the rewards are a more luxurious coat that makes a beautiful trophy.

Mountain Lion

Our territory boasts a thriving population, which makes this mountain lion hunt quite successful. Cats boast a luxurious coat in early winter and are often large.

An award-winning mountain lion was taken from our camp in 2011 by Sarah Brandenburg.

Hunts are early winter, and are one week in duration. Different modes of transportation, including vehicle, snow machine and even snowshoes are used. Your guide uses excellent tracking dogs with the latest in GPS equipment to tree a cat for you.

Grizzly & Black Bear

Grizzly Bears are absolutely king of the Rockies, and have earned the respect of many a mountain man!  Grizzlies average 6-8ft and their awesome strength is demonstrated in flipping over boulders that we would need heavy equipment to move!  Our territory boasts a healthy grizzly population.  Grizzly permits are very limited, so please book well in advance.  This hunt will involve hiking or horseback riding and can be physically demanding.

Our territory has approximately 70% colour phase black bears.  Coat colours range from black to brown and cinnamon.  Hunting black bears is done from the main camp using some vehicles to locate bears as well as hiking.

Deer & Moose

WHITETAIL AND MULE DEER

Trophy bucks are abundant in many areas in our territory.  Whitetail bucks are seen often throughout the year.  Trophy mule deer like hiding in the shadows of mountains and it an be a challenge to hike up to their ranges on higher elevations.  Earlier hunts may require your taxidermist to preserve velvet.

SHIRAS MOOSE

The shiras moose species native to our territory will make a nice addition to the moose hunter’s trophy collection.  We see moose quite often throughout the year on horseback as they are not intimidated by the sight of a horse.  Tags are limited, so book well in advance.  This hunt is 9 days in duration, and one hunter/ one guide only.
