The legendary Yellowstone River begins miles southeast of Yellowstone Lake in our Nation's first National Park. Hikers call it the "thoroughfare trail" which begins at Fishing Bridge with a long hike of nearly 30 miles south down the east side of the lake and up river to the head waters of the Yellowstone.
Flowing steadily northward out of the lake, the riverwinds its way through magical geothermal features and narrow canyons finally thundering over the Yellowstone Falls and mightily on to the confluence with Lamar, then to famed Paradise Valley and Querencia.
