After a bit of a slow start, the hatch has arrived on the lower Deschutes. From Warms Springs down, expect to be pitching dries to willing trout up and down the banks for the next few weeks. The river has dropped into beautiful shape, and we have a good stretch of perfect dry fly weather.

If you are an early riser, and wake up before the Adult stones do, you can clean up on Stone nymphs. From daylight to 10am “ish” we have been cleaning up. All flavors of stone nymphs have been doing well for us, coupled with a mayfly dropper to mimic a PMD or a Green Drake nymph. If you like fishing the “hopper dropper” set up mid day, try a Split Back PMD 18” from the back of your dry. There have been good hatched of PMD’s mid day and even a Clark’s Stone can float a non beaded Split Back. We have seen them as small as a size 18 and as big as a 12, so you don’t need to be too worried about exact sizing. 14’s and 16’s are doing just fine.

We have also been seeing the odd Green Drake here and there. While they aren’t huge fans of high sun, if you do get into even a minor hatch, the fish will immediately come off stones and switch to them, so it’s always a good idea to have a few handy to make a quick switch.
