The town of Waterval Boven came into being in 1894, the terminus of the Highveld section of the eastern railway. Extensive marshalling yards were established here and, for most of its existence, Waterval Boven existed as a railway town. The town - and its little sister Waterval Onder - take their names from the spectacular Elands River Falls near the road tunnel. – Peter Delmar in ‘The N4 Book’

The historical Boven Trout Lodge, previously the Waterval Boven Hotel dating from the late 1800s, is a cosy and well-equipped self catering lodge in beautiful, peaceful surroundings beneath South Hill, the imposing mountain that cradles this quaint village. 
 

You could not have chosen a better place to stay. Waterval Boven, in the heart of Mpumalanga, is central to many of the province’s prime tourist attractions. These include, among many others, Kaapsehoop, Chrissiesmeer, Barbeton, Kwena Dam, Badplaas Hydro Spa, God’s Window, Blyderiver Canyon, Sabie, Graskop and the old mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest, all more or less one or two hour’s drive away. 
 

Close to the southern Kruger National Park and its surrounding private lodges, the village is a mere 110km from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (Nelspruit) and is only 270km from Johannesburg’s Oliver Tambo International Airport. 
 

While at the heart of an unusual historical area, the region is also renowned for its fresh escarpment edge air and exceptional night skies. There are also countless natural locations. These include mountains, forests, waterfalls, world-renowned views, and outstanding flora and fauna. To top it all, being situated on the edge of the Drakensburg escarpment, makes for breathtaking views and spectacular scenery.
 

Waterval Boven is in the triangle of one South Africa’s finest fly fishing areas, with Machadodorp, Belfast, Dullstroom and Lydenburg easily reached. For those not keen on trout fishing, the lodge boasts a large pool and a spacious garden to relax in.
