The spring and summer weather was good for our part of Iowa and the crops along with our Big and Beasty foodplots were in great shape for hunting season with lots of leafy palatable greens and fist sized turnips and huge radishes. Unfortunately for the farmers, corn and bean prices were considerably lower this past year. This meant that we were able to get a better bang for our buck with more and larger corn and soybean foodplots on our leases. Many of the areas that were hit hard by the EHD epidemic year before last have pretty well recovered and the overall numbers of deer and mature bucks on our leases were excellent. This past season the department of natural resources cut the number of resident doe licenses in our unit from 2500 to 850 and the doe licenses were sold out by the time the first firearms season opened which greatly reduced resident hunting pressure. They also did away with the late doe season in January that accounted for a number of shed antler bucks being shot each year. This will definitely work to our advantage in future seasons.
