The 2015 season has come to a close. We had a great group of hunters in this year, 9 bow hunters and 9 gun hunters. It proved to be a successful, but challenging year. Six of the nine bow hunters took shots, but we were able to recover only two of the six. All nine of our gun hunters took shots, with eight of the nine taking home bucks. One gun buck was not recovered. Several of the bucks scored above 160, with the biggest coming in at about 180 (taken during muzzleload season). Many of the bucks taken this year we had on camera both last year and this year. Pictures of this year's trophies can be seen on the photo gallery page.
Coal Camp Outfitters is a full service whitetail hunting operation, family-owned and operated by Paul, Diane and Evan Havick. We are located in Lucas County in south central Iowa; Zone 5 for our non-resident hunters. Lucas County was home to a strong coal mining industry back in the early 1900s, with one of the larger mines located on our farm. Our land consists of approximately 1800 contiguous acres of very rugged terrain and provides prime deer hunting habitat.
In 2000 our family relocated to Lucas County where we own and operate a cow-calf operation. Over the years we have developed several designated hunting areas within the 1800 acres. Each hunting area contains bedding areas and food plots. It is our opinion that sanctuaries and food plots are essential to successful deer hunting. We also have more than 50 tree stands and blinds strategically located throughout the hunting areas to take advantage of deer movement between bedding and food. This has made deer hunting at Coal Camp very predictable.
We began a full schedule of hunters in 2010 and have since taken more than 60 wall hanger bucks grossing between 140" and 180". More pictures can be seen on our Photo Gallery page.
Coal Camp averages 3 hunters per week and limits the total number of hunters to no more than 20 per year.
