Hunting at Mount Airy

Mount Airy consists of 1400 acres of farmland, tidal marsh and native grasses mixed with softwoods and hardwoods along the banks of the pristine Catpoint Creek and the Rappahannock River in the Northern Neck of Virginia. Known throughout the region for its excellent duck and goose hunting, the marshland of Catpoint Creek is an excellent spot to hunt waterfowl along the Eastern Flyway and also holds some of the best Eastern turkey habitat anywhere.

Waterfowl

With the Tayloe Wildlife Refuge (established 1996) bordering our property to the west, and the stretches of Catpoint Creek marshes and spillways along the east, the hunting at Mount Airy is generally good to excellent. Old and new hunters alike will welcome a relaxed but focused approach at achieving the whole duck hunting 'experience'-- starting with an excellent seated dinner in the dining room of the historic manor house, followed by a restful sleep in the West Wing quarters, hot coffee and breakfast, a short drive or boat ride to the blind with a beautiful morning of shooting to follow.

To give you and your party the best experience we only take in one hunting party at a time. Guests hunt with the Tayloe family and pro-staff guides, in traditional family spots in the marshes that have been hunted in by our family for ten generations. Hunters will likely get muddy, wet and/or cold and chest waders are encouraged and recommended.

There are (of course) no guarantees that the hunts will be full strings of mallards and black ducks but we are relentless in our efforts to put you on the birds. Aside from the creek and marsh blinds we also have three new impoundments on the farm for waterfowl hunters.

For 2016-17 check out our Waterfowl Weekend Packages for parties of 2-4 hunters. Package includes 2 mornings of guided duck hunts, an afternoon goose hunt (in season), lodging for two nights in Mount Airy West Wing with two bedrooms and a full English kitchen, all freshly prepared gourmet meals, open bar + bartender and bird prep for transportation home. The West Wing of Mount Airy is a comfortable place to relax, watch football, read or take a nap. You’re free to wander the property, shoot skeet, fish our private mill pond for a trophy bass or take a tour of nearby Stratford Hall and Menokin, two historic homes of the Lee family.

Dove

Autumn dove hunts over cut corn and sunflower fields as a member of the Mount Airy Dove Hunt Club is a great way to shake off the rust and prepare for the waterfowl season!

Spring Turkey

Hunting for trophy Spring gobblers on the private grounds of Mount Airy continues a Tayloe family tradition that goes back to the mid-17th century. Acres of fertile cropland and tidal marshes with extensive pine and hardwood groves await the serious sportsman who wants to challenge their skills by taking a trophy Tom by arrow or traditional firearm in their 100% natural and wild environment. Semi-guided and fully-guided hunts are provided with overnight stay at the manor house with all meals plus a fully stocked bar included.

End your day in the newly renovated West Wing in a leather chair, looking out over the bowling green as the sun sets into the Rappahannock River Valley, with a favorite libation and an (optional) good cigar--the way things were meant to be. Parties of 1-2 hunters only for turkey hunts.
