Hello. I am Frank Williams and have over 25 years experience pursuing wild Upland game birds with my German Shorthaired Pointers focusing mainly on Ruffed Grouse in the mountains of WV. I am very passionate and driven, and aim to go above and beyond to satisfy clients on guided hunting trips.
West Virginia
I like to break hunting in WV into two "seasons," early and late. Early season generally includes finding flights of Woodcock then chasing Grouse later in the morning. This occurs mid October to mid November and conditions are warmer with leaves still green. The Late season occurs mid December through the end of February, and conditions are cold and snowy. Hunting in WV is the most demanding and can be difficult due to the steep terrain and weather.
Up Michigan
Hunts in UP Michigan run the first three weeks of October. Conditions range from 30-70 degrees, with foliage in full color making for a very beautiful trip. Hunts are most productive early in the morning to mid day when conditions are best for the dogs. All hunting is conducted on public lands in young to mid age clear cuts.
Kansas
When in Kansas I always break the trip up by visiting two regions of the state, what I consider predominantly Bobwhite Quail and Pheasant covers, however, mixed bags are a common occurrence. This occurs generally when the seasons open, early/mid November to the end of November. Conditions are generally warm and dry, however temps in the 30's are not uncommon. Cover range from waist high CRP, to cut milo fields, and mixed prairie grasses with plumb thicket draws. All hunting is predominantly on public lands.
These are wild bird hunts, and are only for those enthusiasts who care about the pursuit more than the harvest. Hunters can expect a lot of walking and not much shooting. Hunters should be in good physical condition and able to walk 3-6 miles over moderate terrain. Please contact me and I will help to find the best locations to suit your style.
